I’m looking into joining a class for digital drawing and painting but can’t find any at all in my area. There are plenty of traditional art courses but nothing digital and I was wondering if joining a class in traditional art would have a positive or negative impact on me learning digital art?

When I went to college to learn some form of digital art, there were only two kinds of classes offered: Traditional and design.

Design was digital, but they had me using a Mac and I was using Adobe Illustrator to design logos, among other things. It wasn’t quite what I was hoping to learn.

When it comes to learning digital art, traditional is the way to start. Taking a traditional art class will teach you about shading, angles, shapes, etc. While it was all done on paper, learning to draw a perspective within a confined space is essential for any artist.

I’d share some of my own examples, but I lack a scanner.

Anyway, when you finally switch to doing digital art, you can find plenty of tutorials on Deviantart as well as some examples / tutorials on Youtube. People teach how to use Photoshop, gimp, illustrator, etc. all the time and you just need to be willing to put in the time to learn with the program you have.

So yes, I believe it would be an extremely positive impact on your learning curve regarding art and eventually going digital.

Thanks so much for the advice :) I’ve found a course nearby that looks perfect for me starting in the new year!

I really want to get into digital art using Photoshop and a tablet. The thing is, I haven’t drawn at all since art lessons at school 8 years ago and I have absolutely no idea where or how I would start. I’m watching a load of Youtube beginner tutorials, but I know there’s a lot of people on here who are into this. Do any of you possibly have any advice with starting out?
